Red Bull’s Christian Horner expressed bewilderment at how McLaren has mastered the F1 technical regulations this season to combat extreme tyre wear on hot tracks like Austria. During the Austrian Grand Prix, Red Bull’s 77-race point-scoring streak was broken with Max Verstappen crashing out and Yuki Tsunoda finishing last, while McLaren’s Lando Norris won the race, closely followed by his team-mate Oscar Piastri who now leads the drivers’ standings by 15 points.
After the race, Horner conceded he couldn’t comprehend how McLaren’s car can closely chase another car for numerous laps without damaging its tires, praising their ability to protect the tires and maintain a good balance. Reflecting on a tough weekend at the Red Bull Ring, Horner lamented Verstappen being taken out by Mercedes’ rookie, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, in a spectacular manner on the opening lap.
Despite Kimi’s apology, the incident proved costly for Red Bull, putting a dampener on what was supposed to be a memorable home race.
