Several automobile clubs, predominantly from the Americas, have thrown their support behind current FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, dealing an early setback to rival Carlos Sainz Sr’s bid for the presidency.
While speculation had suggested Ben Sulayem may run uncontested in the upcoming election, the news of Sainz’s potential challenge has added intrigue to the race.
Despite facing criticism for his leadership, including controversial decisions and internal conflicts, Ben Sulayem has garnered backing from 36 FIA clubs and key figures like Fabiana Ecclestone.
In a letter expressing gratitude to Ben Sulayem, club presidents highlighted his accomplishments in stabilizing the FIA’s financial situation, implementing reforms, and enhancing the organization’s global standing.
Prominent signatories of the letter include Ricardo Morales Rubio, Frank Fotia, Fabiana Ecclestone, Daniel Coen, Carmelo Sanz de Barros, and Gorki Obando, who expressed their support for Ben Sulayem’s re-election bid.
