When Formula 1 introduced turbocharged hybrid power units in 2014, Mercedes had devoted more time and resources to the project than any other manufacturer, leading to nearly five seasons of dominance. The prospect of history repeating itself with the shift to new power units keeps team principals awake at night. This apprehension has been evident in F1 for months, with instances like the temporary V10 nostalgia and Alpine switching from Renault to Mercedes power units.

More recently, amidst changes at Audi, engine chief Adam Baker was replaced. Audi’s F1 engine program operates as a separate company owned by Audi Sport, with Baker leading the F1 engine development. Reports suggest Audi’s engine program is facing challenges, prompting CEO Gernot Dollner to attend a crucial meeting with F1 stakeholders.

Efforts are being made to create provisions for struggling teams within the 2026 regulations, though implementing these changes within the current financial limitations of F1 presents a significant challenge. FIA’s Nikolas Tombazis emphasizes the importance of finding solutions for underperforming teams within the constraints of the cost cap, focusing on enabling development rather than artificially boosting engine performance.
