American Tim Mayer is planning to announce his candidacy for the FIA presidency in December’s election, as reported by Motorsport.com sources. The 59-year-old aims to challenge current president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who dismissed him as an FIA steward last November. Mayer is expected to hold a press conference near Silverstone on Friday before the British Grand Prix, as reported by the BBC and Motorsport.com. Despite Carlos Sainz Sr’s decision not to run for FIA president due to current circumstances and Dakar commitments, Mayer presses on with his intention to run. Mayer’s candidacy will need approval from the FIA nominations committee, with his background in IMSA and stewarding roles in various championships, including Formula 1, supporting his potential candidacy. In the past, Mayer clashed with Ben Sulayem over controversial decisions, such as the swearing ban that led to Max Verstappen’s community service order, ultimately leading to Mayer’s dismissal by the FIA.
