The first trailer for Netflix’s new docuseries, ‘F1: The Academy,’ was unveiled on Tuesday, offering a sneak peek into the seven-part sports documentary centered around the all-female junior racing series, F1 Academy. Produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine, the show follows the success of ‘Drive to Survive,’ bringing F1 to broader audiences. Although lacking F1’s intense rivalries, the trailer suggests a focus on the personal and professional challenges faced by young women off the track.
Managing director of F1 Academy, Susie Wolff, highlights the opportunity for the 15 female drivers from worldwide and the make-or-break nature of succeeding in the program. Reigning champion Abbi Pulling emphasizes her racing career aspirations over modeling, with the trailer also showcasing the struggles and aspirations of drivers like Lia Block and Bianca Bustamante.
Despite challenges, Bustamante, a former McLaren development driver, discusses leveraging social media to fund her costly racing career and the pressure of high expectations. ‘F1: The Academy’ premieres on Netflix on May 28, promising an inside look at the competitive world of female junior racing in the backdrop of F1.
