In NASCAR Cup Series practice at Chicago, William Byron was showing promise by outpacing Shane van Gisbergen, setting the pace in the first practice group with a lap time of 1:31.008s, three tenths faster than SVG. However, he made a costly mistake when he lost control of his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet entering Turn 10, damaging the car and starting from the rear of the field. Byron acknowledged his error, saying, “I’m an idiot,” while explaining his attempt to regain tire temperature after leaving pit road. Despite the setback, he was confident in his ability to make progress during the race, emphasizing his dislike for starting from the back due to a crash. Byron ended up second overall in practice, but his teammates Chase Elliott and Alex Bowman also encountered wall contact. Elliott hit Turn 4, while Bowman had to replace a bent toe-link.
