How Adrian Newey is “provoking” Aston Martin

Andy Cowell stated that Adrian Newey’s recent comments in the media have motivated Aston Martin’s design team to accelerate the outfit’s development. Newey highlighted an issue with data correlation in the simulator at Aston’s Silverstone HQ, suggesting a two-year project to rectify it. Cowell, in an interview on the James Allen on F1 podcast, mentioned that his design team is determined to surpass Newey’s projections and enhance their performance swiftly.

Cowell emphasized the importance of continuously improving and meeting high standards set by individuals like Newey within the organization. Despite Newey’s estimation of a two-year timeline, Cowell expressed confidence that his team would expedite the process. Cowell and Newey, who first collaborated in 2004 at McLaren, have rekindled their working relationship to drive improvements at Aston Martin as they transition to Honda engines for 2026.

Regarding his expertise in F1 hybrid engines from his time at Mercedes, Cowell believes it will aid in integrating the new engines effectively. He lauded Newey’s focus on detailed race car design while acknowledging their strengths and weaknesses. Both Cowell and Newey share a commitment to open communication and working collaboratively towards achieving high standards in Aston Martin’s performance.
