The FIA has revised the penalties in Appendix B of its International Sporting Code, reducing fines for drivers swearing and introducing mechanisms for suspended penalties and mitigating circumstances.
In January, the FIA updated its sporting code to include steward guidelines on driver misconduct, covering offensive language, assaults on officials, and incitement to such actions.
Controversies arose over the new rules, with backlash from World Rally Championship drivers supporting Adrien Fourmaux’s fine for swearing at Rally Sweden and complaints about unclear language breach criteria.
Measures like the reduced base fine from €10,000 to €5000 were adjusted following incidents like Max Verstappen’s swearing in Singapore, leading to changes in penalty application and differentiation between controlled and uncontrolled environments.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized promoting sportsmanship while preserving accessibility and ensuring respectful conduct towards FIA officials at all events.
