George Russell and Max Verstappen sharing the front row for the Canadian Grand Prix feels familiar, as last year they were also at the sharp end of the grid with Russell on pole and Verstappen alongside him. However, this time Russell was over a tenth and a half quicker than Verstappen, with interesting insights from the GPS data during the qualifying laps compared. The data showed that Russell gained time by braking later into the chicane and at the hairpin, but Verstappen had a slightly better exit at the hairpin, showing the Red Bull car’s aerodynamic efficiency. In the long runs, Lando Norris had the best pace, while Russell and Verstappen might have a straight fight based on race pace if they survive the opening laps cleanly. Verstappen’s penalty points remain a talking point, but both drivers are focused on the win without being in a championship battle.
