William Byron and his No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet looked strong at Michigan on Sunday, leading 98 of 200 laps and winning a stage. Despite a valiant effort to hold off Denny Hamlin in the closing stages, Byron eventually ran out of fuel just before the race finish, dropping to 28th place.
Byron acknowledged that they simply didn’t have enough fuel to make it to the end, despite his best attempts to save fuel and manage the race. He expressed disappointment about the situation but praised the team for their performance and strategy throughout the race.
Despite the tough break at Michigan, Byron still leads the regular season standings. While he has come close to victory multiple times this season, including leading the most laps at Darlington and Charlotte, he’s been unable to secure a win since the Daytona 500.
Nevertheless, Byron remains in a strong position in the championship, holding a 41-point lead over teammate Kyle Larson. The focus now shifts to the upcoming races as he aims to turn near-misses into victories.
