The story of NASCAR and Mexico was shaped by the Contreras brothers, Carlos and Enrique, who brought their Mexican heritage to the premier stock car division. NASCAR’s allure seemed like destiny for them, rather than just a stroke of luck.
Carlos Contreras made history as the first Hispanic driver to compete in a full season in one of NASCAR’s top three divisions, while Daniel Suárez became the first Mexican and non-American to win a national series championship in the NASCAR Cup Series.
Originally focused on reaching IndyCar with help from Mexican sponsor Herdez, the Contreras brothers unexpectedly fell in love with NASCAR during a visit to a Truck Series race.
After debuting in the Truck Series at Fontana oval in 1999, Carlos Contreras surprised everyone with his performance, catching the attention of NASCAR legend Kyle Petty, eventually leading to his first full season in 2000.
Despite facing challenges due to his lack of experience in NASCAR-style racing, Carlos Contreras’s journey represented a significant milestone for Mexican representation in NASCAR.
