A Racing Legend’s Legacy: Remembering the Iconic NASCAR Team Owner Larry McClure

Larry McClure, known to long-time NASCAR fans, co-owned Morgan-McClure Motorsports with Tim Morgan and brother Jerry McClure from 1983 to 2012. He passed away at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Virginia, confirmed by his family on Wednesday.

Their race team, utilizing the iconic No. 4 car with a Kodak paint scheme, won 14 Cup races, including three Daytona 500s, making them one of the ten teams in history to achieve this feat. Their wins were not only at superspeedway tracks but also at other renowned venues like Bristol, Watkins Glen, and Martinsville.

Their most dominant victory came in 1998 at Martinsville when Bobby Hamilton took the checkered flag, leading 378 of 500 laps from pole position. Sterling Marlin’s achievement of finishing third in the championship standings in 1995 was a notable highlight for the team.

Despite having NASCAR Hall of Famer Mark Martin as their first driver in 1983, it was Ernie Irvan’s arrival in 1990 that led them to their first Victory Lane. Larry’s nephew, Eric McClure, was also a part of the racing legacy, competing in almost 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series races before his untimely passing at the age of 42.
