The Mercedes Formula 1 team will evaluate the use of a laser detection system on its Safety Car in partnership
Luminar, in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, will be implementing its LiDAR technology on the official FIA Safety Car starting in 2024. This technology uses lasers to create a highly detailed 3D map of the environment and enables precise object detection even at high speeds and in adverse conditions. The system can detect debris up to 250m ahead and larger objects up to 500m. Once approved by the FIA, the system will be fitted to the roofline of the Mercedes AMG GT Black Series Safety Car for race weekends, providing real-time information on track conditions. This partnership aims to enhance the Safety Car driver’s ability to assess the situation on the track while maintaining high speeds.
