Mercedes are investigating a component failure that led to George Russell crashing in the post-season F1 test in Abu Dhabi.
George Russell caused a major disruption when he crashed at Turn 6 during the final day of F1 track action in 2023. Mercedes has confirmed that the incident was due to a mechanical failure that is currently under investigation. The pictures show Russell’s car with damage to the front-right corner and missing its front wing, suggesting a direct impact with the barriers. Mercedes does not expect Russell to return to the track for the remaining three hours of testing. Russell was participating in a combined tyre and young driver test for Pirelli, and at the time of the accident, he had completed 58 laps and had the seventh-fastest time.
