Fabio Quartararo says Yamaha needs ‘15 winters’ to catch the MotoGP pace setters, but believes the gap can be reduced for 2024.
After a disappointing 14th place finish at Phillip Island, Quartararo expressed his frustration with Yamaha’s performance, saying that “nothing was positive” during the weekend. When asked if one winter is enough for Yamaha to close the gap for 2024, Quartararo said that they need “15 winters” to truly be like their competitors, but his goal is simply to get closer to them. He mentioned that Yamaha had a magical chassis in the past that allowed for great bike control, but now the bike is slow and not turning well. Although the Yamaha engine is faster this year, other manufacturers have also improved in that area. Quartararo emphasized the need to reduce the gap to other teams and that it is his main goal. Currently, he is in tenth place in the world championship and Yamaha is at the bottom of the constructors’ standings. Proposed changes to the technical concession rules could potentially help Yamaha and Honda speed up their recovery next season.
