Verstappen Thundering Ahead: Stepping Up his F1 Game Post-Nurburgring Test

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner stated that Max Verstappen can compete in other motorsport series to blow off steam, but emphasized that his main focus must remain on Formula 1, especially after a recent secret test at the Nurburgring. Verstappen secretly tested Emil Frey Racing’s Ferrari 296 GT3 car, setting a new lap record at the Nordschleife circuit under the name “Franz Hermann.”

Horner praised Verstappen’s passion for various types of racing, including GT racing, highlighting his exceptional skills and dedication. While allowing Verstappen to explore other racing opportunities, such as the Nurburgring 24 Hours, Horner stressed that F1 remains the top priority, ruling out the possibility of Verstappen missing an F1 race.

Historically, F1 drivers have participated in different racing events, like Nico Hülkenberg’s Le Mans 24 Hours win and Fernando Alonso skipping the Monaco GP for the Indy 500. Red Bull’s more flexible approach towards driver freedom is evident, but striking a balance between other motorsport interests and F1 commitments remains crucial.

Verstappen’s liberty to race elsewhere is currently unimpeded, but the dynamics might shift next year with Ford joining as a technical partner at Red Bull, potentially causing image conflicts between a Ford-backed driver and a Ferrari-powered car on track. The ongoing saga underscores the delicate balance between pursuing different racing passions and delivering consistent performances in Formula 1.
