Unleashing the Power of Hard Compounds: Russell’s Key to Success in the Sizzling Spanish GP

In the development of its W16 for 2025, Mercedes has maintained its weak point from last season – poor thermal management, especially at the rear axle. Despite being advantageous in colder races, as seen in the 2024 Las Vegas race, high temperatures pose a risk of tire overheating for Mercedes. During FP2, both Mercedes drivers did long stints on soft tires to find a setup that prevents excessive tire degradation on race day.

George Russell expressed concern about Mercedes’ race pace based on their qualifying performance in Barcelona, while hoping that the hardest Pirelli tire will fare better under overheating conditions. Russell also highlighted the team’s struggles on Sundays and the need to improve race pace despite maintaining qualifying speed.

Andrea Kimi Antonelli, qualifying sixth, echoed Russell’s sentiments and emphasized the importance of tire management in hot conditions. Both drivers acknowledged the challenges ahead for the team in the upcoming race and the adjustments made to enhance race pace.

Although optimistic about qualifying results, both drivers recognized the tough task ahead in managing tire wear during the race and the importance of preserving the tires for optimal performance. Mercedes aims to leverage its long-run data and improved qualifying pace to translate into a competitive race performance in the face of strong competition.
