Yuki Tsunoda will start from the pitlane in F1’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix after Red Bull built up a spare chassis following his Imola qualifying accident, where he lost control over his RB21 heading into the Villeneuve chicane and made heavy contact with the inside wall.
The Japanese driver climbed out unhurt and a spare chassis was built due to the extent of the damage, along with the need for Tsunoda to use a fresh Honda power unit, his third of the season, as part of various components changed under parc ferme. The penalty for exceeding the limit for battery and control electronics is absorbed in the pitlane start.
The FIA’s technical delegate Jo Bauer confirmed the spare chassis usage and the pitlane start in accordance with the Sporting Regulations. Tsunoda accepted the blame for the incident, citing his lack of understanding despite car changes and receiving the same upgrades as teammate Max Verstappen.
