One of the three updates applied by McLaren for the Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix concerned a minor tweak to the front suspension, consistently used in the first third of the 2025 season. Lando Norris opted to continue with the updated suspension during qualifying, while Oscar Piastri reverted to the previous setup that had proven successful thus far.
Team principal Andrea Stella mentioned that the subtle modification aimed to provide the drivers with slightly more feedback at the front end, addressing the perceived lack of sensitivity in the MCL39 reported by drivers, particularly Norris. Stella clarified that the new suspension does not directly impact the car’s performance, but rather alters the drivers’ perception and feeling through the steering and suspension.
Despite confirming that the suspension changes did not result in added performance, Norris expressed confidence leading up to the final Q3 run, where he eventually made contact with the wall. Stella emphasized that the adjustment served as another option for the drivers to fine-tune their setups and ensure equal competitiveness within the team.
In conclusion, Stella reiterated that the front suspension variation primarily caters to the drivers’ individual preferences and driving styles, rather than significantly boosting the car’s performance. The goal remains to maintain a balanced approach that allows both drivers to maximize their potential with the MCL39 throughout the race weekend.
