Russell: F1 should make Monaco GP a qualifying race

George Russell believes a significant change might be necessary for the Monaco Grand Prix format following an unsuccessful Formula 1 rules experiment that involved using three tyre sets to create strategic variance.

Despite the intention to add excitement, the top four qualifiers maintained their positions, and artificial tactics like purposely slowing down hindered genuine competition, frustrating drivers like Russell.

Russell personally faced challenges during the race, including a penalty for failing to yield after shortcutting a chicane while stuck behind a slower car, expressing his discontent with the current state of the Monaco race.

Suggesting a more drastic overhaul, Russell proposed a scenario where qualifying results could directly affect points allocation, emphasizing the thrill of qualifying over the processional race.

He highlighted the unique nature of Monaco’s circuit and the need for a more engaging spectacle as the event reaches a significant milestone in its history.
