Hyundai is showing strong signs of continuing in the World Rally Championship until at least 2026, despite previous doubts about its future and potential shift to the World Endurance Championship by 2026 under Genesis.
Questions lingered over the possibility of Hyundai leaving WRC early, prompting talks of Rally2 becoming the main class sooner if Hyundai’s departure occurred.
Hyundai’s President and WRC team principal Cyril Abiteboul expressed optimism at Rally Portugal that the WRC program would extend into 2026, with further elaboration at Rally Sardinia.
Confirmation of Hyundai’s 2026 participation would uphold Rally1 regulations for their full five-year tenure before transitioning to WRC27 rules.
However, uncertainty surrounds Hyundai’s involvement in 2027 due to clashes between the regulations and the manufacturer’s aims of promoting technology and alternative powertrains.
Cyril Abiteboul emphasized the need for regulations that support manufacturers like Hyundai in showcasing relevant technologies for the future.
