Tim Mayer launched his presidential campaign for the top job at the FIA in the unconventional venue of Whittlebury Hall, taking cues from American presidential campaigns with his ‘FIA Forward’ manifesto. Despite the setting near Silverstone, Mayer engaged with the press and outlined his vision in a manner reminiscent of US primaries, emphasizing the need for personal outreach.
Acknowledging the upcoming FIA election in December, Mayer disclosed his six-month campaign plans, expected costs of $4-6 million, and key supporters seeking change. While expressing gratitude and addressing concerns over the incumbent Mohammed Ben Sulayem, Mayer did not shy away from critiquing the current FIA leadership and highlighting areas for improvement.
Drawing parallels to retail politics and emphasizing the importance of genuine inclusion within the FIA, Mayer positioned himself as a candidate unafraid to challenge the status quo. Despite some evasiveness on certain topics, Mayer’s bold approach and clear messaging signaled a strong start to his campaign, leaving an impression in the motorsport community.
