George Russell continued his Canadian Grand Prix success by topping the timesheets in the opening practice for the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring. Russell set a blistering lap time of 1m5.542s in his Mercedes, outpacing Max Verstappen by 0.065s. Raindrops and traffic hampered late challengers, allowing Russell to maintain his lead. Championship leader Oscar Piastri took the third spot, as rookie Alex Dunne impressed in fourth on his F1 debut. Lewis Hamilton faced gearbox issues, finishing ninth, while Fernando Alonso spun in his Aston Martin. Pierre Gasly came in fifth, with Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto in sixth, followed by Williams pair Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, and Isack Hadjar completing the top 10.
