Sauber Formula 1 boss Jonathan Wheatley expressed relief and satisfaction regarding Nico Hulkenberg’s unexpected fifth-place finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, attributing it to the team’s successful upgrades.
Despite struggling to score points in the tight midfield battle after the season opener, Sauber’s major upgrades in Barcelona, including a redesigned floor and modified front wing endplates, proved to be effective.
Hulkenberg’s superb driving and impressive start enabled him to secure a remarkable sixth place, later upgraded to fifth following Max Verstappen’s penalty.
Wheatley praised the team’s hard work and passion, highlighting the significant progress made in performance with the Barcelona upgrade.
He emphasized the importance of tiny margins in the midfield battle and expressed optimism that Sauber can now actively compete for points in future races.
Wheatley commended Hulkenberg for his outstanding performance and underlined the team’s newfound competitive edge and improved car performance at Barcelona.
