In the first free practice session for F1’s Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola, Oscar Piastri edged out his McLaren team-mate Lando Norris by 0.032s, with the session being red-flagged due to a late crash by Sauber’s Gabriel Bortoleto. Piastri and Norris led a closely contested session as teams tested substantial upgrade packages at the historic Italian track near Bologna, which is hosting its last F1 race for now. Norris initially set the pace on soft tires with a time of 1m17.125s before Piastri took the top spot with a 1m16.545s lap, just ahead of Norris’ 1m16.577s. Other notable performances included Carlos Sainz in the Williams posting a time only 0.020s behind Norris and Lewis Hamilton overcoming brake issues to secure the fifth-fastest time. Alpine’s Pierre Gasly impressed with a sixth-place finish, while Max Verstappen voiced concerns about his Red Bull’s balance and finished seventh. The session also saw Bortoleto’s promising start marred by a late crash, with Williams and Sauber standing out for their quick adaptation without upgrades.
