Carlos Sainz Sr decided not to pursue a late push for the FIA presidency, despite initial consideration of standing against the current president, Mohammed Ben Sulayem.
Ben Sulayem received a timely boost with a letter of support signed by 36 clubs, primarily based in the Americas, praising his leadership qualities and vision.
The support came after public criticism from Motorsport UK chairman David Richards, questioning Ben Sulayem’s moral compass amid organizational changes within the FIA.
Despite the potential challenge from Sainz, who garnered support due to his experience and likability, Ben Sulayem is now set to run unopposed in the December election for a new term until 2029.
Uncontested elections in sports leadership are not uncommon, as shown by historical examples such as Sepp Blatter’s uncontested reelection as FIFA president in 2011.
