A Resilient Journey: Wickens’ Determined Step Forward on the Comeback Trail

After sustaining life-changing injuries in 2018, Robert Wickens never wavered in his determination to get back behind the wheel of a racing car. Supported by those around him, his comeback is now in full swing with an IMSA SportsCar Championship campaign in a Chevrolet Corvette equipped with cutting-edge hand-controls developed with Bosch Motorsport. Wickens’ unwavering commitment to racing was evident to his friend and former teammate James Hinchcliffe from the beginning, who fully believed in Wickens’ return.

Although it took nearly three years, Wickens made his racing comeback, prioritizing milestones like marriage and fatherhood in the meantime. His return to the cockpit in a Hyundai Velostar TCR reignited his passion for racing, prompting a full-season drive in the 2022 Michelin Pilot Challenge and subsequent success. Wickens, together with Bosch, has advanced to the main IMSA series this year, competing in sprint rounds with a Corvette Z06 GT3.R and innovative hand-controls developed by Bosch.

The collaboration with Bosch has led to the development of a new system for hand controls, incorporating brake by wire technology for precise control during races. Wickens views this system as a significant breakthrough, enhancing his driving experience and performance on the track. With his triumphant return to racing and advancements in technology, Wickens continues to inspire and push the boundaries of what is possible in motorsport.
