Michael Schumacher enjoyed great success with F1 during his career, but he had some controversial moments – including this one!
Twenty years ago today, Michael Schumacher was involved in a controversial incident during qualifying for the 2006 Monaco Grand Prix.
Schumacher held provisional pole position, but a mistake in the dying moments raised suspicions that he had deliberately caused a yellow flag to prevent his rival, Fernando Alonso, from improving on his lap time.
Despite Schumacher insisting it was an honest error, the stewards reviewed data and footage and concluded that his actions were deliberate.
As a result, all of Schumacher’s qualifying times were deleted, and he started the race from the back of the grid.
The incident tarnished Schumacher’s reputation, with many in the paddock and fans questioning the integrity of his actions.
Years later, there were hints from former teammates that there may have been discussions about creating a yellow flag, but Schumacher never publicly admitted to any wrongdoing.
