Monsoon Mayhem: A Dramatic F1 Race Abandonment Tale

On this day in 2009, one of the most dramatic F1 races unfolded as a result of an amount of rain which will never be forgotten!

In a dramatic turn of events, the heavens opened and visibility disappeared during the shortest Malaysian Grand Prix in Formula 1 history, due to extreme weather conditions.
On April 5, 2009, a heavy tropical rainstorm flooded the Sepang International Circuit, leading officials to halt the race after just 33 laps, with 56 originally scheduled.
The race did not restart, and the results were based on the standings at the end of lap 31, as per sporting regulations.
Jenson Button was declared the winner, but it later emerged that his car had a serious issue with water affecting the electronics in the steering wheel.
If the race had resumed, Button’s car would have failed due to this issue, potentially costing him crucial championship points in his title-winning season.
