McLaren took a risk in 2025 by ending development of its Formula 1 car earlier than Red Bull, leading to a waiting game between the teams.
Despite having a strong start with the MCL39 car, McLaren’s decision to halt development mid-season resulted in a loss of race-winning pace.
Lando Norris secured the driver’s championship in the final race, narrowly beating Max Verstappen by two points.
McLaren’s Engineering Technical Director Neil Houldley defended the decision, citing the need to focus on gaining an advantage under new rules for 2026.
Although Red Bull continued development and made gains, McLaren believes it made the right choice for the future.
The team will enter 2026 with confidence in its strategy, aiming to prove the decision’s success in the upcoming season.
