Charles Leclerc expressed concerns about the new 2026 Formula 1 cars potentially being less enjoyable to drive due to reduced downforce and increased drag, sparking debate within the senior team members about the upcoming changes.
The new cars will feature a different power profile with additional hybrid power coming from a split between internal combustion engine and electric energy, bringing emphasis on managing energy deployment across various circuits. Opinions vary on whether adjustments are needed to prevent early energy depletion on straights. Active aerodynamics will be introduced to counteract any adverse effects from the new power units.
Leclerc mentioned at the Austrian Grand Prix that driving the new cars may not be the most enjoyable experience for him, emphasizing the need for further evolution of the project. World champion Max Verstappen also had reservations about the new regulations but remained open-minded, waiting to assess the changes firsthand in the car.
Williams team principal James Vowles assured Leclerc that development will improve the driving experience and mentioned the advanced preparation his team has made for the 2026 rules. It is common for drivers to struggle with adapting to new regulations, as seen in previous significant rule changes in Formula 1 history.
