Tim Mayer is poised to announce his candidacy for the FIA presidency, competing against current president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who dismissed him as an FIA steward last year.
The 59-year-old American, son of former McLaren chief Teddy Mayer, plans to hold a press conference near Silverstone on Friday before the British Grand Prix.
Reports from BBC and Autosport confirm Mayer as the contender challenging Ben Sulayem.
Former F1 driver Carlos Sainz Sr has opted out of the presidential race, citing unsuitable circumstances and Dakar commitments.
Mayer, with a background in IMSA and ALMS, needs to assemble a team of officials and be vetted by the FIA nominations committee to run for the role.
Previously at odds with Ben Sulayem’s decisions, Mayer’s dismissal stemmed from representing Circuit of the Americas at a review hearing, criticizing the FIA president over controversial choices.
Several prominent FIA members have been sacked recently, including ex-F1 race director Niels Wittich.
