Last week, the Kyalami circuit in South Africa announced its plans to upgrade to FIA Grade 1, necessary for hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix. The FIA approved these plans, seen as a crucial step towards F1 returning to the country after 1993.
The approval grants a three-year window for required upgrades, such as run-off areas, barriers, and fencing, with some work pending a potential F1 race. Notably, the 4.5km layout itself remains unchanged.
Despite initial excitement, progress for a South African GP seems sluggish, with bureaucratic hurdles and delays impeding the process. While politicians have voiced support for F1, actual progress has been lacking until now.
The bidding process, overseen by a government committee, has faced criticism for lack of transparency and steep entry fees, with some bidders already disqualified. Financing a potential South African GP remains a major challenge given economic constraints and high unemployment rates in the country.
