Pole qualifying for the Indy 500 took a dramatic turn when the Team Penske cars of Josef Newgarden and Will Power were penalized and sent to the back of the field due to unapproved modifications at the rear of the cars. The focus has been on the rear attenuators, which absorb impact in a crash and reduce g-forces on the driver, as well as serve as the mount for the rain light assembly, but there is more to the story. These modifications have been in use for over a year and have evolved through multiple updates by Dallara. The rear attenuators went through several updates during the 2023 and 2024 seasons to enhance their strength and performance, with mandatory modifications and updates issued by Dallara and IndyCar to ensure compliance and safety standards. The latest changes to the attenuators were implemented at the start of the 2024 season to improve their structural integrity and overall effectiveness based on detailed Finite Element Analysis.
