Revamped Regulations: FIA Tightens Punishments for Driver Outbursts

The FIA has revised the penalties in Appendix B of its International Sporting Code, reducing potential fines for drivers caught swearing and implementing mechanisms for suspended penalties and mitigating circumstances.

In January, the FIA updated its code with stewards’ guidelines on driver misconduct, including offensive language, assaults on FIA members, and incitement to misconduct.

Controversies arose over the code, with drivers in the World Rally Championship supporting Adrien Fourmaux, fined for swearing at Rally Sweden.

The revisions address unclear language breach criteria, exemplified by unpunished expletives from Formula E’s Dan Ticktum.

The FIA’s reduced base fines and suspension options apply to first-time offenders, clarifying when penalties apply.

President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized promoting sportsmanship while preventing actions that harm the sport, showcasing the FIA’s commitment to fair competition.
