Ducati’s dominance of MotoGP over the past two seasons has come while they have run the most amount of bikes on the grid.
This year, Ducati has a total of eight bikes on the MotoGP grid, with two factory bikes and two bikes each from Pramac, Gresini, and VR46 teams. They have the best machine in the championship and benefit from sharing data between their riders. Ducati’s sporting director, Paolo Ciabatti, clarified that there is no obligation for teams to reduce their presence on the grid or sell a satellite team. The policy of sharing data has allowed Ducati to speed up development, but it has also given a competitive advantage to other teams. Ducati is guaranteed to crown their second consecutive MotoGP champion this year, with Francesco Bagnaia, Jorge Martin, and Marco Bezzecchi in contention for the title. Ducati aims to improve in all aspects, and they consider having multiple champions on their bikes a luxury. The turning point for Ducati’s fortunes came in 2015 with the debut of the GP15 bike, after two challenging years. Since then, they have consistently been competitive, with multiple second-place finishes and finally winning the championship last year.
