Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff Asserts Dominance with Bold F1 Engine Declaration

A change to F1’s power units has been discussed for 2027, but appears to be on the verge of collapse.

Toto Wolff has indicated Mercedes’ support for a significant alteration to F1’s power units starting in 2027. The main feature of the new engines will be a 50:50 distribution of power output between the internal combustion engine and the enhanced 350kw battery systems. Issues arose during the initial races due to super-clipping and lift and coast tactics, notably affecting qualifying as drivers couldn’t push to the limit without risking energy depletion. Discussions have occurred regarding shifting the power balance to 60:40 in favor of the ICE for the 2027 season to decrease reliance on batteries, necessitating a supermajority vote in the Power Unit Advisory Committee. Although Honda remains neutral, Audi and Ferrari are reportedly opposed to the proposed change, with Audi especially displeased about investing heavily in the 50:50 split before a potential alteration. Wolff, who leads the Mercedes team powered by Mercedes HPP’s top-notch units, has expressed support for the 60:40 adjustment, emphasizing the entertainment value of current races and the expected benefits of the planned modifications to enhance power and energy management. However, no final decision has been reached as the engine manufacturers continue to deliberate and the voting process remains pending.
