FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has moved to remove term limits from his position and others.
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is advocating for the elimination of the term limit for serving as the head of motorsport’s governing body. This proposal, aiming to extend his tenure beyond the current 12-year maximum, is scheduled for discussion and voting during the upcoming FIA General Assembly. Present regulations allow for a maximum of three four-year terms for the FIA presidency, totaling 12 years in office. Ben Sulayem, who assumed office in December 2021 and was re-elected unopposed last year, faces the upcoming decision. The proposal aims to establish a consistent tenure approach across all FIA bodies and will require approval by the World Councils and General Assembly. The decision to remove term limits entirely draws parallels to the NFL model, highlighting commissioner Roger Goodell’s successful long-term leadership. The current three-term limit was initially established by Ben Sulayem’s predecessor, Jean Todt, who followed Max Mosley in the FIA presidency.
