It was an extraordinary moment for Max Verstappen, and so near yet so far for Fernando Alonso.
Fernando Alonso seemed on the brink of ending his 11-year pole position drought at the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix, but Max Verstappen’s late heroics saw him snatch pole by just 0.084s. Verstappen’s stunning final sector propelled him ahead of Alonso, with the Spaniard left agonizingly close to the top spot. Despite a cautious start to his lap, Verstappen’s daring final sector, brushing the barriers, secured him a remarkable pole position. Charles Leclerc completed the top three in a fiercely competitive session, while Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez suffered a setback after crashing in Q1 and finishing last in 20th place. Alonso graciously congratulated Verstappen on his achievement, recognizing the Dutchman’s exceptional performance.
