Russell’s Thrilling Last-Minute Pole Position Shocks F1 World in Intense Canadian Qualifying Showdown

George Russell pipped Kimi Antonelli to pole for the Canadian Grand Prix after an enthralling qualifying session at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

George Russell secured a stunning pole position at the Canadian Grand Prix with a lap time just +0.068 quicker than Kimi Antonelli, marking his third successive pole at the track. Lando Norris placed third, followed by Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton, and Max Verstappen in the top five. Hamilton and the Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso faced investigations, while Pierre Gasly was impeded by Hamilton during qualifying. Gasly also unfortunately hit a marmot, causing floor damage to his Alpine and impacting his pace in Q2.

During Q3, Russell initially struggled but managed a last-gasp lap for pole position, while Verstappen was disappointed with his performance in sixth. Charles Leclerc and Hamilton were also in the top positions behind the Mercedes drivers and McLarens. In Q2, Antonelli set the pace, with Russell lagging in eighth, and several drivers, including Gasly and Sainz, failed to make it to Q3. Colapinto continued his strong form, outqualifying Gasly, and unusual incidents involving marmots affected several drivers during the qualifying sessions. The final grid for the Canadian Grand Prix was set, with Russell leading the pack from pole position.
