It would be a dramatic decision for F1 and the FIA to take – but would you be in favour of it?
FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem has announced the possible return of V8 engines to Formula 1 by 2031 at the latest, with a potential introduction as early as 2030. This declaration was made during the Miami Grand Prix weekend in May. Ben Sulayem emphasized that the comeback of V8s is inevitable, citing that “V8 is coming.” The FIA requires the approval of four out of the six current power unit manufacturers for a 2030 reintroduction, but the governing body holds the authority to implement the change unilaterally by 2031 without manufacturer votes. The proposed V8 units would focus on simplicity over the current complex hybrid systems, incorporating minimal electrification while prioritizing lightweight and reduced complexity. This possible shift coincides with the V6 turbo-hybrid era’s 13th season and updated regulations, sparking the question of support for a return to V8 engines in Formula 1.
