Audi newcomer reveals dramatic u-turn behind ‘no-brainer’ decision

Allan McNish felt he was ready to step into his newly created role of racing director at Audi.

Allan McNish has recently shared the reasoning behind his unexpected career shift into team management, despite previously vowing not to do so upon retiring from racing. McNish achieved great success as a racer, including multiple Le Mans victories and championships in various series. Despite his initial reluctance, he embraced the challenge of leading Audi’s Formula E team to victory in its inaugural season, before transitioning to a role in their F1 project.

Having been involved with Audi since the beginning, McNish was quick to accept the position of racing director when offered by Mattia Binotto. Their collaboration aims to streamline race operations and driver development within the team. McNish’s dedication to the project was evident as he reflected on witnessing the car’s debut race in Melbourne, describing it as a special moment.

Although initially hesitant to take on a managerial role, McNish found the opportunity to work with Binotto and contribute to the team’s success too compelling to pass up. The dynamic between the two leaders allows for a supportive and efficient workflow, as McNish continues to learn and adapt in his new position. Looking ahead, he is eager to progress and enhance the team’s performance through his experience and dedication.
