JPM claims current F1 is “really special”. Is he right on this one?
Juan Pablo Montoya expressed skepticism towards nostalgic fans who believe that the F1 era in which he raced was superior to the current one. Formula 1 and the FIA faced criticism for the 50-50 power split between combustion and electrical energy, resulting in unpredictable “yo-yo racing” dependent on battery life for overtakes. Adjustments were made in key areas after discussions with F1 stakeholders to enhance the sport, including making qualifying more exciting and improving safety. Following the Miami Grand Prix, drivers acknowledged the need for further improvements in qualifying and racing, but the overall consensus was that the spectacle had indeed gotten better. Montoya, a seven-time grand prix winner, noted that while passing may be more challenging now, the quality of racing has remained strong.
