Formula 1 Drama: Max Verstappen’s Unexpected Red Bull Driver Swap

Today marks 10 years from a Red Bull decision which would change F1 forever.

The decision to bring Max Verstappen to Red Bull was made almost two years before he was promoted to the senior team, in a move that surprised many in the F1 world. Red Bull’s clear pathway to F1 proved to be the deciding factor over Mercedes’ interest in the Dutch driver. After a successful debut season in 2015, Verstappen’s promotion to the senior team in 2016 came after just four races into his second season. The replacement of Russian driver Daniil Kvyat with Verstappen raised eyebrows, especially considering Kvyat’s solid performance in the RB12. Kvyat, who had himself been promoted to Red Bull from Toro Rosso just a year prior, found himself back in the junior team in a surprising turn of events.
