Former F1 driver and four-time Paralympic Gold medalist Alex Zanardi has passed away at the age of 59, as announced by his family. Zanardi had not been seen in public since a serious road traffic accident in June 2020 in Italy. Following the accident, he underwent multiple surgeries and remained in hospital until December 2021. Zanardi competed in F1 for teams like Jordan, Minardi, Lotus, and Williams before moving to CART, where he became a two-time champion. The accident in 2001 resulted in life-changing injuries, leading Zanardi to shift focus to handcycling and eventually winning gold medals at the Paralympic Games. His family released a statement expressing deep sorrow and gratitude to supporters after his passing on May 1.
