Formula E drivers handed ‘not far off’ F1 verdict

Formula E has some huge stars on its grid, many of whom would feel at home in Formula 1, according to Sam Bird.

Former Formula E driver and ex-Mercedes reserve Sam Bird has emphasized the competitiveness of the all-electric series, stating that it is now “not far off” Formula 1 and represents a “completely different ball game.” Since its inception in 2014, Formula E has undergone remarkable growth and evolution, with Bird notably participating in 11 consecutive campaigns before transitioning to the role of Nissan’s reserve driver. The championship has made significant technological advancements, including doubling power output and transitioning to the fastest-accelerating FIA single-seater with the current Gen3 Evo model. The talent pool in Formula E is diverse, comprising former F1 drivers and emerging young stars who are proving their worth in the series. As Formula E prepares to introduce the Gen4 car next season, Bird anticipates further elevations in competitiveness and driver quality, with the existing grid already rivaling many F1 counterparts according to his assessment. In reflecting on the evolution of Formula E, Bird highlighted the shift from requiring mid-race car changes in the Gen1 era to the current high-powered, world-class competition featuring drivers who could potentially excel in Formula 1.
