Charles Leclerc did not anticipate Oscar Piastri leaving him in his wake at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc expressed his surprise at Oscar Piastri’s rapid pace during the opening lap of the Japanese Grand Prix. Despite securing the lead ahead of Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, Leclerc struggled to keep up with Piastri’s strong performance. After being overtaken by Russell, Leclerc regained momentum following a safety car period and managed to secure a podium finish by passing Lewis Hamilton and the second Mercedes car. Leclerc highlighted his astonishment at Piastri’s early race advantage, indicating that he anticipated the Ferrari to match the McLaren’s speed. Nevertheless, he remained hopeful for a comeback later in the race, although it did not materialize.
