A Battle Royale: Liam Lawson Sets the Stage for a Defiant F1 Defense Against Max Verstappen Backlash

Liam Lawson believes it is natural there are major differences in how F1 cars feel in 2026.

Liam Lawson defended the differences in the 2026-spec F1 cars after Max Verstappen criticized them heavily. Verstappen called the new energy management-focused formula “anti-racing” and likened it to “Formula E on steroids” during pre-season testing. The power units now split power 50-50 between the internal combustion engine and the batteries, a change from the previous 80-20 ratio favoring the engine. Lawson believes that with still-developing regulations and new chassis rules, teams need time to adapt and optimize performance. Despite the current challenges, Lawson noted that through continued development and adaptation, teams can improve and adjust the cars to better meet drivers’ needs, particularly in terms of speed and handling. The increased difficulty in getting off the line compared to previous years is a notable change, but Lawson is confident that teams will learn and evolve to excel in the new F1 era.
