FIA presidential candidate Tim Mayer, born and raised in the UK to American parents, has a rich background in motorsport, including working with the governing body from 2009 to 2024 and connections to McLaren through his father, Teddy Mayer.
His father, Teddy Mayer, played a crucial role in McLaren’s success for nearly two decades and after Bruce McLaren’s passing in 1970, he took over the business, showcasing his business acumen and legal skills.
Tim Mayer’s involvement in motorsport began early, being born in 1966 during McLaren’s search for an engine supplier for their first F1 car, and he later studied in the UK before pursuing a career in the US military.
Returning to motorsport in the 1990s, Mayer worked with Emerson Fittipaldi before starting his consultancy company, G3 Communications, and undertaking various managerial roles in motorsport organizations like Champ Car and IMSA.
Mayer’s tenure as an FIA race steward led to conflicts of interest, notably in representing the US Race Management in a dispute over safety measures at the US Grand Prix, resulting in his dismissal via text message and criticism of the decision-making process within the federation.
