Breaking Barriers: The Trailblazing Foreign-Born Race Winners of NASCAR

Shane van Gisbergen secured his third career victory at the Chicago Street Course in 2025, making him the most successful foreign-born driver in NASCAR Cup Series history.

Although NASCAR is predominantly American, the sport saw its first points-paying Cup race outside the US in Mexico City in 2025 since 1958.

Daniel Suarez, the only foreign-born driver to win a national-level title in NASCAR, took the Xfinity Series championship in 2016.

NASCAR is gradually becoming more international, evident in races like the 2022 Cup event at Watkins Glen with drivers from seven countries, setting a series record.

In the last five years, 11 Cup races have been won by non-US drivers, including van Gisbergen, Suarez, and Marcos Ambrose, collectively winning 16 Cup races.

41 races across NASCAR’s major divisions have been won by foreign-born drivers, with 13 victories coming from Canada, showcasing the sport’s growing global reach.
